Two of the major U.S. credit card companies Mastercard and Visa have been blamed for not stopping payments to access content related to child abuse and trafficking on adult content website OnlyFans<\/a>. The allegations were made in a whistleblower complaint which was filed in the year 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whistleblower is a senior compliance expert in the credit card and banking industries and has alleged that the companies were aware of the usage of their cards to pay for illegal content since the year 2021. The companies are charged with neglecting the illicit revenue streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where was the Complaint Filed Against Visa and Mastercard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The complaint was filed with the U.S. Treasury\u2019s Financial Crimes Unit, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), and the U.S. Justice and Homeland Security departments in January 2023. The whistleblower claims that Visa and Mastercard were warned by federal agents in the years 2021 and 2022. They were notified about the unlawful content. The whistleblower accused them of \u201cturning a blind eye to flows of illicit revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint says that the two companies have received multiple warnings from anti-trafficking experts and U.S. federal agents in 2021 and 2022 about the prohibited content on OnlyFans.But, both companies have failed to take necessary action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complaint also states that they knew about the existence of child sexual abuse content on the platform but continued processing payments on OnlyFans. Thus, the companies have failed to comply with anti-money laundering requirements and have violated the Bank Secrecy Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is There Any Evidence to Back the Allegations?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is much evidence and investigations that support the allegations made by the whistleblower in the complaint. A report by the Anti-Trafficking Intelligence Initiative (ATII) in 2022 says that a lot of OnlyFans accounts were found to be linked with Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and sex trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the companies i.e. Visa and Mastercard have denied all the claims made by the whistleblower. A spokesperson from Visa said \u201cWe will remove any financial institutions or merchants failing to meet our robust compliance requirements. We employ top-tier controls to prevent, detect, and address illegal activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Mastercard spokesperson said \u201cMastercard holds all users of its payments system to high standards and, if illegal activity is identified, we work with partners to act. The three government agencies hadn\u2019t referred to any specific illegal activity for us to investigate or act on. No evidence of current illegal activity has been provided to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was OnlyFans\u2019 Response to the Backlash?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the claims, another company that is facing the backlash is OnlyFans. But, the UK-based company hasn\u2019t responded to the allegations made by the whistleblower. On its website, OnlyFans<\/a> conveys that it enforces a \u201czero-tolerance policy\u201d against any content related to child abuse or trafficking. It blocks or takes down material that violates the companies\u2019 rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
