‘Dune: Prophecy’: The Rise of the Bene Gesserit and Impact on the Dune Universe
Set 10,000 years before the emergence of Paul Atreides and his ascension as Lisan-al-Gaib, the long-awaited Dune: Prophecy series depicts the earlier stages of the evolution of the Bene Gesserit order which started as a school for gifted young girls to a mystic superpowered sisterhood that controls the Imperial rule at the beginning of Dune.
According to reports, Dune: Prophecy is an adaptation of Sisterhood of Dune, the first part of the Great Schools of Dune prequel trilogy written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson which was completed after Frank Herbert passed away.
The series showcased the Harkonnen Sisters especially Valya and Tula as its main protagonists. Some of the thundering events within the Dune timeline, the drastic biological modification wars called the Butlerian Jihad, turned out to be one of the triggering points. These sisters were born around sixty years after the ending of these wars resulting in the complete erasure of machines across the galaxy.
As first hinted during the End of Dune Part II movie, the sisters are also relatives to the antagonist of the series: Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the infamous niece Feyd-Rautha, Beast Rabban, as well as Paul’s mother, Jessica and Paul himself.

The Plot of Dune: Prophecy
In the opening act of Prophecy, Valya being introduced together with Tula as young siblings has, fit to be the stage in which Valya is being prepared to replace Raquella’s granddaughter, Reverend Mother Dorotea. Besides being a granddaughter, Reverend Mother Dorotea is also Raquella’s deputy, who is expected to occupy a position of leadership within the sisterhood, as she would have been primed to lead as a Mother Superior.
It is worth noting that Raquella was a champion during the wars; she was the one who came up with the idea of forming an order in the first place. It is worth noting that Truthsayers could possess the power of truth. They were like spies with the ability to separate the truth from lies and were assigned to Great Houses for that purpose.
But, given the political climate at the time, the order was always going to have a conflict with Raquella over her push to establish a secret breeding scheme, which is why an older Valya had reservations about it.
There was strong opposition within the sisterhood about ruling the employing the breeding scheme to employ the right royal partners and produce successors who would be under their supervision. Valya’s sister, however, was more open to Raquella’s vision of Daniel: a “fanatic” view that disregarded the purpose of the order.
In the end time, Raquella tempts Valya closer with her dead breath and whispers the prophecy that makes Valya even more intransigent to the notions Banshi stood for. “Red dust. It’s coming. Titan-Arafel,” she says, alluding to the biblical phrase that describes the bringing of a tyrant who’s zealot-driven. “You will be the one who will see the burning truth and know.’
However, when Doroteya then tries to annihilate the breeding index amidst her grandmother’s last wishes, Valya takes to a form she has been practising, The Voice – a form of persuasion – a person that is made to speak so that another must do as she commands, that is Valya tells Doroteya to commit suicide by stabbing with her own knife.
As Homeland and Mother Superior Raquella’s trainee, Valya has such close ties with the Order of the Bene Gesserit that it won’t be surprising if she occupies a top position immediately after Dorotea is out of the picture. And now it is abundantly clear after 30 years that she has done something to quite a large extent towards the Order’s dominance over the Imperium.
Having planned for the daughter of the Emperor Javicco Corrino, Ynez, to move with plans to evaluate to become a Sister after wedding the 9-year-old Pruwet Richese, daughter of the Emperor Javicco, to a House Richese child heir, Valya’s plan to make one of the Bene Gesserit’s children the first empress of the Imperium is coming to Culmination.
That is up to the moment when Pruwet, House Corrino’s tamp and Mother Kasha perish under Desmond Hart’s sword. Desmond, the warrior who Emperor Corrino believed was dead but served in his army on Akris, can return. Desmond’s casting is interesting as he notes “the power has been given” which Valya shows her contempt for.
“Well, Desmond is connected to the prophecy which kind of initiates the series,” Schapker told IGN. “He really is the mystery of the show. And whoever or whatever has empowered him is a major puzzle that our sisters have to find out.”
The rest of Dune: Prophecy’s five episodes will be shown every week on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on Sundays and will also be made available for streaming on Max.
Turning Points in Episode 4 of Dune: Prophecy
Exploring wider dynamics between powerful characters in allied houses, Episode 4 “Twice Born” depicts the recruitment of Javicco by the Empress Natalya, a character portrayed by Jodhi May. The transformation reaches its peak with Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), who is suggested to possess some unknown deadly force.
Jodhi May and Strong explain to Perri Nemiroff from Collider what stood out to them in Dune: Prophecy as they attempted to shed light on their characters throughout the scenes. They also elaborate on Javicco’s weaknesses, their relationship, Hart’s last scene at the court and how it will play out for the Corrino family in the episodes to follow.
Dune: Prophecy Episode 5 Trailer
Dune: Prophecy episode 5 will be released next Sunday 15th December 2024. But, the trailer for Dune: Prophecy episode 5 recently came out, and it asks more questions than it answers as the Sisterhood stands on teetering ground and House Corrino inches closer to all-out war.
Now, episode 5’s release is just around the corner and ahead of it, Max just dropped the Dune: Prophecy episode 5 trailer on their platform which features the Sisterhood searching for a new way to rule after having a confrontation with the powerful soldier Desmund Hart.
In the previous episode, Valya and Hart are in a high-pressure situation, considering Hart kills a traitor in front of the Landsraad at the request of the emperor, so fighting Valya looks to be an all-out war, and tensions are brewing.
